Scenerles ollhe Suzhou Creek Sfflii!JJX1,;`6 . .
The Suzhou Creek, about 125km in totallength and also called the "Wusong
River", originates from Guajingkou of the Taihu Lake, flows through Wujiang,
Suzhou, Kunshan, Jiading and Qingpu and finally pours itself into Huangpu
River. Before the widening of Huangpu River, the Suzhou Creek used to be
called the "mother river" of Shanghai. It`s not only an important artery for
water transport of Shanghai, but also the place where urban public utilities
closely related to residents here were developed, by which the prologue of
the modernization ofShanghai commenced.
The Suzhou Creek we usually talk abouttoday actually refers to the section of
the Suzhou Creek from Beixinjing to Garden Bridge, which has become a
landscape river course famous for its beautiful sceneries.

Shanghai, the largest port city in China, is located on the west bank ofthe
Pacific Ocean, the middle of the north-south coastline of China and the front
edge ofthe alluvial plain ofthe Yangtze River Delta, bordering on Yangtze
Estuary in the north and adjoining with Hangzhou Bay in the south. Here the
Yangtze River joins hands with Huangpu River and flows into the East China
Sea. From time immemorial, Shanghai, the land "flowed across and
surrounded by rivers and seas" ,has built an indissoluble bond with water,
and is featured of intertwined river courses and waterways extending in all
directions. What used to be zigzag waterways in the old times have become
streets today, and the history ofthe transition from waterways to streets is
also the history of Shanghai itself.
Huangpu River and the Suzhou Creek, the two largest golden waterways in
Shanghai, and the Dianshan Lake, the largest lake in Shanghai, have brought
about spirituality and comfort to the city.
It can be well said that there is a tie that links Shanghai and water together.

people living on this part ofthe country. The towns have already become
what today we know as "ancient towns" ,filling the air with amorous feelings
of ancient water towns, together with the murmuring of running waters.
